Rich maths questions!

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at some rich maths questions, where students are required to problem solve and use a range of different mathematical strategies to find the answers. 

Here is one to have a go at, you could even do this with your whānau at home to see what mathematical strategies they would use. 

When I went into a classroom earlier this week a child rushed up to tell me she was 8 that day!

If you are 8 then this could be for you, but if it is another number then you just change the 8 to whatever your age is today.

Find a great variety of ways of asking questions which make 8. 

(If 8 is the answer, what is the question?) 

Things like 6+2, 22−14, etc.

But you need to get examples that use all the different mathematical ideas that you know about.

1) So you could show some multiplication and some division.

2) If you know about fractions then you can add or subtract numbers involving fractions. You could also ask questions like "What is half of 16?''; "What is four-fifths of 10?'' and so on

Story book characters!

This week we are learning about how to create our own story book characters! We watched a clip from the Literacy Shed https://www.literacyshed.com/nightzoo.html which gave us directions on how to create our character. 

Here are some wonderful, short pieces of writing. 

Ken the Griffen 

Ken has spots all over his body that glow in the dark. His wings are as hot as the sun. His beak is as shiny as a diamond. Ken lives in the far woods in an invisible cave, only Griffen's can see the cave.

Hayley the fat, happy Hedgehog 

Hayley has a fat tummy like a big elephant. He has tiny teeth but are razor sharp. He also has a spikey back but it is fluffy like a rainbow pompom. Don't be scared to touch him. Hayley lives at the top of the cold Mount Maunganui.

At the end of our session we shared our stories to a buddy and highlighted two words in our stories that we thought were amazing! 

Swimming Sports 2018!

What a fantastic day in the water! Everyone was enthusiastic, dressed in their house colours and rearing to go. Students were able to swim in at least 4 events throughout the day. 

When we returned from school we discussed and wrote down what we felt, smelt, heard and saw at the event. 

I felt cold and bored waiting for my race.
When I was racing I felt pain because I didn’t have any goggles.

I heard birds and the other kids when we were outside.
When I went inside I heard people screaming and splashes.

I saw people getting fit using tools at the gym upstairs.
I saw a rainbow of colours from the houses.
